Despite my problems with the racial politics, When Night is Falling has a distinctly visual beauty that develops the love story into one that is heartwarming and endearing. There are several scenes that make tremendous use of the circus setting. From elegant trapeze artists to humorous anecdotal scenes of circus life on a shoestring budget, you can see why Camille is tempted to join Petra and run away with the circus. The warmth and humanity of Petra’s world is starkly contrasted with the cold, austere stone facades and stony faced people at Camille’s Christian college. Like the story Camille tells Petra about Cupid running away with his lover because “gods and mortals were forbidden to be together,” you want Petra and Camille to overcome all obstacles for the sake of true passion and blossoming love. With gorgeous cinematography, elegant and symbolic references to mythology and a deliciously satisfying sex scene between two feminine women with amazing chemistry, this movie is certainly a must see. One can only hope now that Rozema has tried her hand at an even bigger budget film, Mansfield Park, she won’t stop making films that successfully marry attention to cinematography and explicitly gay content. MY REVIEW
First thing I've noticed was the on screen chemistry of both ladies.I admire the simplicity of the story and how touching it is on it's way. It's not the typical lesbian film where women hit on someone in a bar and ended up having sex. It's not like those predictable movies where one is a lesbian by choice because of paternal issues or peer pressure. It is not also like a typical lesbian story where one woman is just experimenting or worst ended having a threesome. The story though in this movie is very sensitive as it covers morality on the christian perspective.Camille is a teacher at a christian school where lesbianism is considered a wild and sinful practice. It is perceived as something done by a mentally sick person. The film is just amazing like I feel peaceful after watching it.It doesn't leave you with heavy emotions as most gay gay themed movies do.Even on the end part when Camille almost died because she got drunk and slept outside is still somehow relaxing to watch. At first,it looks like Petra was her sex slave. She would go to her, make love and then just move on like nothing happened. It's either she's too polite to say something or she's too scared to face the reality.Either ways, when confronted by the situation so she can make up her mind, she just simply don't know how to tell them what she wanted coz either way, there's a huge consequence. She knew from the start that she loves Petra more than her future fiance,it's just not the right thing to do.Petra, being the wild, experimental free spirited person who loves working in a circus has somehow help Camille face her fears. I guess I also have personal reason why I like this movie.I simply admire people who are open, unreserved and free spirited.I always wanted to be like them because I'm one hell of scared boring person.I wanted that courage and braveness to do everything you wanted to do.I long wanted to come out of my comfort zone.To have as much experience as possible and have fun at the same time.Be hurt once in a while.Go out in the open, shout my heart out.Be free, feel love and be happy.I have been box with a routine for the last 26 years of my life and I regret not doing something extra ordinary. Well, this movie is really beautifully executed. It's easy to understand and enjoy, the love scene is really something. It means the acting is really great.I love the setting of each scene.I love the starting scene of the movie. It's catchy and interesting. I love the fact that no one has to die in the story. No one committed suicide. No one forced to marry a guy and in the end run away from her groom so she can be with her real love.No complicated culture to deal with.No parents or family to argue or question or validate the feeling. No other conflicts. The movie is focused simply on what is important, what each character feel and what they do about it.In the end,to be able to deal with others,we have to deal with our selves. We have to settle our own confusions. Our own personal issues because it's what matters. You can't handle others unless you handle yours. And I'm not only talking about feelings in relationships but in almost everything.
