The Adventure:
A man with no fear is a man without courage. All that is beautiful and the meaning to life is hidden within all that is unknown. If you aren’t scared stiff about life in general, then Tom Sawyer would laugh and say that this isn’t an adventure and isn’t a life fully lived. Just as we can only be brave whenever we are scared, an adventure is only an adventure when we have the essential spice of fear that gives the flavor of excitement. The most important moments in our lives are during the hours which fear consumes us and grips us; when man kneels and ask another to be his forever, when we pursue an elusive dream which has evaded so many, when we turn away from a life that we have become comfortable to for something more true. The greatest adventure is within all that we fear and within the moments that ask us to become vulnerable. Many times people follow another course despite the calling from their heart, accepting a map given to them by another rather than drawing this map with their own ink and quill. A life for which the mountains and valleys are already conveniently drawn on the paper along with the landmarks for which we are to go see amongst a sea of people whom have also accepted to follow this map. In contrast when we pursue an adventure, we are giving ourselves a blank parchment of paper for which the mountains and lows may be greater than anything we have seen before and have excepted, but alone will be stand when we see the beauties of this world which no map can navigate us to. Only when we have become lost in the woods, left out cold and hungry do we truly “see” these beauties for what they are. Maps are essentially laid out by one whom has gone a certain path, allowing one to reach a point that they arrived at, but how are we to know where to go in the thickness of the woods which grows wildly without one? By learning from the brave souls whom also wandered off the path, for success always leaves trails. By following the footsteps of those we idolize and admire and through the remains of fires that they have left in the woods, we can retrace how they treaded a mountain that kiss the clouds and navigated themselves through the lowest of valleys that touch Hell without the promises of their being something worth our troubles at the end. It’s okay to admit that you are scared, as one can only be brave when they are scared. As humans, there are many things to which we have no control over, and cannot hold ourselves accountable over; however, creating a map of our own is an obligation to the World, which we live in, and something that we owe to ourselves. I say that it is an obligation, for courage and living a life dictated by one’s own terms inspires a fire in others to do the same, just as a flower would give new life through its’ seed which befall it. A great tragedy if Michael Jordan had quit shooting his basketball after not making the varsity team in high school, a personal pain if J.K. Rowling had put down her pen after being rejected from 12 publishers, and moments of childhood terribly missed if Walt Disney had accepted the criticism by a Newspaper publisher for being “not creative enough”. A blank piece of parchment is not something to fear, but something so incredibly refreshing, as we are no longer obligated to follow the course that has been laid by another, but live life on our on terms. Don’t ask for permission to live a life that you dream of living and follow your own path. Namaste, Forrest Curran
