The truth is, your hair’s bad behavior can be traced back to how you take care of it. Constant styling, exposure to extreme temperatures, and other bad hair habits damage your hair—to a point where your tresses simply refuse to cooperate. The solution? Give your hair the TLC it deserves. Here are nine tips to get you started!
1. Wash your hair every other day. Frequently washing your hair strips it of its natural oils called sebum, which protect and keep your strands hydrated. This can cause your hair to either get too oily, as the glands in your scalp produce excessive amounts of oil to make up for the loss of sebum. 2. Get it trimmed every two months. Believe it or not, getting a trim every two months actually helps your hair grow healthier. That’s because getting a trim means you chop off the “older” part of your hair—which is most likely dry, brittle, and riddled with split ends (eew!) 3. Practice proper hair care in the shower Hot showers may feel divine, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause damage to your hair (it also dries out your skin!) If you can’t stand taking cold showers, wash your hair with lukewarm water instead. Also, refrain from rubbing your hair with a towel! Hair is most susceptible to breakage when wet, so extra care is needed. Pat your hair with a towel, then use the same towel to gently wring your hair. Use the right type of brush for your hair Natural-bristled brushes work best for all hair types, as it helps redistribute oil from the roots to the tips. Use magnesium brushes when adding volume or for curling: the heat from the dryer warms the metal, which makes drying time shorter. And always use a wide-tooth comb when brushing wet hair. 5. The less you brush, the better Brushing a hundred times a day will do more damage than good. The repetitive tugging motion of constant brushing can cause hair breakage. Instead, brush your hair using gentle strokes. This helps distribute the natural oils from your scalp throughout the hair’s shaft. It also flattens the cuticles, reflecting more light (which makes your hair look shinier.) Gentle brushing also helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp. 6. Lay off the styling tools Regularly using a hair dryer, curling iron, or flat iron causes hair to become frizzy—and eventually, brittle and dry. If you use these tools frequently, don’t be surprised if your tresses start to break off, and if split ends become a regular thing. As much as possible, try to hold off the styling tools. Use a heat protectant spray If you absolutely must expose your hair to heating tools, make sure to use a heat protectant spray. Hair protectant sprays act as a barrier from heating tools. Look for one that includes keratin, which reduces frizz. 8. Work quickly when styling your hair The less exposure to heat, the less damage. When using a curling or straightening iron, make it a point not to use it for more than three to four seconds per section of hair. 9. Eat the right kinds of food Having a proper diet helps keep your hair shiny and healthy. For starters, make sure you take in a lot of protein. Hair is essentially made up of protein, so ensure it stays healthy by eating chicken, fish, and nuts. Stock up on iron-rich food, such as spinach, kale, and broccoli: they help supply nutrients to the hair follicle. Keep hair shiny and hydrated by eating food with Omega-3 oils, such as fish and avocado. And finally, take fruits and vegetables, which are full of antioxidants—these help fight free radicals, which cause hair (and skin!) damage.
