PLOT [ SOURCE:WIKIPEDIA] Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank) is a young female-to-male non-operative transgender man, whose birth name was Teena Renae Brandon. When Brandon is discovered to be anatomically female by the brother of a woman he once dated, he becomes the target of physical threats. Not long after, he is involved in a bar fight and is evicted from his cousin's trailer. Brandon moves to Falls City, Nebraska where he cultivates friendships with ex-convicts John Lotter (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom Nissen (Brendan Sexton III), and their friends Candace (Alicia Goranson) and Lana Tisdel (Chloë Sevigny). Brandon becomes romantically involved with Lana, who is unaware of his biological sex and troubled past. The two make plans to move to Memphis, where Brandon will manage Lana in a karaoke career. Brandon is detained for charges that arose prior to his relocation and placed in the women's section of the Falls City prison. Lana bails Brandon out. After Lana asks why Brandon was in a women's prison, Brandon lies to her, saying he was born a hermaphrodite and will soon receive a sex change. Lana declares her love for Brandon, "no matter what he is." Tom and John become suspicious after they read a newspaper article about Brandon that refers to him by his birth name, Teena Brandon. Tom and John force Brandon to remove his pants, revealing his genitals. They try to make Lana look, but she shields her eyes and turns away. After this confrontation Tom and John chase Brandon to an isolated location, where they beat and violently rape him. Afterward, they take Brandon to Nissen's house. Though injured, Brandon escapes through a bathroom window. Having been threatened by his assailants and told not to report the attack to the police, a distressed Brandon is nonetheless convinced by Lana to file a report. One evening, John and Tom get drunk, and decide to kill Brandon. Despite Lana's attempts to stop them, John and Tom drive to Candace's remote house where they find Brandon, who has been hiding in a shed on Candace's property. John shoots Brandon under the chin, and Tom shoots Candace in the head while Lana fights them and screams for them to stop. John stabs Brandon's lifeless body and Tom attempts to shoot Lana, but is stopped by John. John and Tom flee the scene, while Lana lies with Brandon's dead body. The next morning, Lana wakes up on Brandon's dead body. Her mother arrives and takes an emotionally wrenched Lana away from the scene. The film ends with Lana leaving Falls City while a letter Brandon wrote her is read in a voice-over. REVIEW After watching this movie,I check all the you tube videos that covers the real story of Brandon Teena.I watched the documentary because I wanted to see the untwisted version of it.You see that's the thing, when they made it into a movie, somehow the flow of the story is being manipulated to make it more appealing or at least pleasing to the public eye. THE STORY was one of the most shocking and saddest news ever. While media feasted on it and probably making big money out of it,somewhere families were lamenting over the cruel death of three people.Brandon for trying to be true and wanting the world to accept her.Lisa for being a good and protective friend and Phillips who happen to be in that house too. For me,it was sadder because at some point it was like a circus.Base on what I've read on Wikipedia,I think it is still an open case.It felt like a circus because the statements of the accused are inconsistent.I don't understand anymore what's going on.What's clear is they seem to be trying to save their own ass.On the other hand,it was a good thing because it served as an eye opener or a lesson to many.Actually this incident promoted social awareness. But does it really have to be this morbid? Do we have to watch more lives sacrificed? Does it need to come this far before we ever learn? Watching this movie angers me and also makes me pity Brandon.I can't help but think of the "what if". If she didn't wish more, could she be alive today? And if she's alive, was there someone who help influence the world the way her life story did? AS A MOVIE.Playing a character inspired by true events must be somehow very challenging from an actor's POV because their first critic would be the people behind the real story. Swank got her first Golden globe award for her role as Teena. Why wouldn't she when she really worked hard for that role. She was so feminine in real life but there's no hint of it when she played as Brandon. That's what I call extra ordinary acting! She deserved that award apparently,Teena's mom thinks it is insensitive to take all the credits about your acting when you know nothing in real life.Well, she had a point. That leads me to question,if she's not emotionally ready, why did she allow them to make her daughters' story into a movie? For me it depends on the intention.Did she allow them for the money or to raise awareness? Or maybe it's not her decision to make.Who knows!
SOCIAL IMPACT.Today,I think,it's gotten too much already.Imagine how many people had suffered to fight for it .Some even died trying to be who they are or trying to be the person they wish they were.Even before Ellen came out of the closet, there were lots of people out there who are brutally hurt because of this. There were lots of students bullied for being stray or peculiar or odd.To be yourself freely is unrecognized.A lot have suffered even Ellen said that she had been the joke of the late night shows or morning tabloids. She was jobless for three years for no one even want to come near her. They have fought so much. They stood up so people will understand that they are humans too.But here's the thing. After watching a couple of LGBT themed movies,tv shows, gigs etc.I realized it was way too off already. How many times have I watched vague shows of girls claiming to be bi or lesbo or whatever but in the end,the relationship ended because she fell in love with a man and got married. If they don't portray them as desperate, they were portrayed as psychotics or delusional or worst suicidal. It is always in both extremes.I see lesbians who are heavily tattooed with piercings everywhere holding a glass of wine on her right and a cigarette on her left.Or if not there are these so called "lipstick lesbians" who really did nothing but make out anywhere like an animal but in reality doesn't like girls at all. They are just adventurous and bored in their relationships so they created conflicts in their lives to make it look like it was cool. It was just so sad how things turned up these days.I think it is an indirect insult or mockery to the LGBT community. They portray these false characters that always ends with so much stupidity. What's more interesting is most of the films were directed by male and I call them perverts because obviously, they were making these to fulfill a fantasy.Who knows.I really think it is too much.In fact I think celebrities had the biggest influence that a lot of people just randomly decide they are gay because of what they see on screen. It is very annoying. Come to think of it,the world is really chaotic. As much as we try to understand how people are,we get more and more complicated.I guess after all what happened to the movie,it points us to one truth-Love,acceptance and respect... I think this is the message of this movie.Who are we to judge others? Who are we to alter God's natural design for us? Everything in our lives is our choice so in everything we do,be responsible.Respect others and yourself as a respect to your creator. We may not fully understand the changes that's happening in human race but it's not ours to judge. It's God's and God's only.
