Castle of the Day Dunure Castle, Ayrshire Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis, is renowned for having roasted the Commendator of nearby Crossraguel Abbey over a fire here in 1570. The Kennedys were slow in renouncing the Old Faith at the Reformation and so when a ‘despised’ Stewart was made Commendator of the Abbey lands of Crossraguel (the last abbot of which was the Earl of Cassilis’ uncle), action was obviously to be anticipated! Allan Stewart was pounced on by the Earl’s men and carried to the castle , where in a vault, he was roasted over a fire until he signed away the property “with all clauses necessar for the great King of Carrick to haste him to hell” |
