Earlier today, I was watching Emma Watson interviewing Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani Nobel peace prize awardee who has survived the nightmares of oppression in her country for promoting education. Her father being an educator has the biggest influence in her life & has trained her to be the strong & unfazed at such an early age. She was the girl who stood up and fight for her right to education. When asked what her ultimate dream is or if given the chance to have super power & do whatever she wanted, it would be to go back home to her country & start her dream of bringing education home and actually put her dreams into action. She now has the MALALA FUND, an NGO supported & endorsed by some celebrities. It was just so amazing & inspiring how a teenager can have such depth of insight & deep passion in life. While most girls her age worry about rejection, peer pressure & heart breaks, she is busy facing world leaders with the hopes of getting their support and commitment to promote education. It thrills me seeing Emma Watson a new favorite & admired celebrity doing the interview. It'd just weird seeing a shy Emma who was also sitting in front of the girl as a huge fan. The harry potter girl grew up to be a woman and chose to be voice of those shut in the dark. I am watching 2 of my favorite people in the world right & my heart is just so full. So far, I have heard nothing but positivity to this girl. She pulled her life around by graduating a bachelor’s degree while acting. I have started following her when I saw her constantly on the news for her advocacy "himforher". With the world changing and the bigger visibility of outspoken strong women like them, I can now imagine the power of positive influence they can give to the world. In one of her questions to Malala, she asked if Malala would consider she a feminist to which Malala clarified further. If by definition, feminism means equality then she said herself she is a feminist in that definition. It got me thinking and made me re evaluate my stand about Feminism. Do I consider myself Feminist? Do I support Feminism? My only problem with this is how majority of group of feminist have represented it in such a negative way. I have witnessed such negative connotation & ugly representation of Feminism, the reason why I am hesitant to identify myself as Feminist. In fact, I am not fond of the term alone. However,if we have a better representation and meaning of it and if feminism means equality where humans just support & respect each other; then by that, I am a feminist because I support unity. If feminism means allowing a man or a woman to pursue their passion and do the things they can imagine themselves capable of doing without discriminating & limiting them to gender stereotypes then consider me a feminist. A woman would appreciate it so much if a man opens a door for her and be just a gentleman. If that was a man’s true motive and nature and that is the values he was taught and the character he wanted to live with, then he should be respected. The same respect should be given to a woman who believes in such values and wanted to do the same out of choice. She shouldn’t be laugh at for opening the door for a man. If a man wanted to do household chores or pursue things that society branded as too feminine, he shouldn’t be laugh or branded or bullied for celebrating his soft side as we all do have our masculine and feminine side. It goes if a man shed tears or he expresses emotions, he shouldn’t be told shut and shoves off what he feels because it is too girlish. In the same way, if a woman wanted to pursue a career that is tougher such as joining the military or doing things that are usually regarded as too manly, then she should be given her spot as long as she is able to do so. If feminism is being defined by these and that the foundation of feminism is pure respect care and love and free of hatred for each other regardless of gender differences then I will be a feminist until my last breath and proudly wear that mark in my body. I have so much to say about feminism but I will end here. I am yet to know the truth behind all these. The truth is I cannot speak for everyone based on my own perception and limited experience. I support equality in certain degrees but not to the extent that man and woman are equal in all aspects because by nature, a woman can never equal the strength of a man physically. They are just born with it. In the same way, a man by nature thinks differently hence the differences between a man and a woman. Having said that, a man can never equal a woman's resilience and ability when it comes to some other practical things. I think that we are designed to compliment each other and not to equal each other by nature hence I cannot fully support feminism because I will have a problem with the term alone. But I get and agree to most of the issues brought up by these two ladies. I fully support Education that it is every child's right to get one. I fully support respect, chivalry and expression of one's self to be the best version of themselves. I think that there's just more serious issues to address such as terrorism, child molestation, poverty, corruption among others. While we are arguing about FEMINISM, many children are suffering from lack of food, parental guidance, no access to education etc. I would rather focus my energy to all those before dealing with FEMINISM which is of course a big deal as well. I would still commend Emma specially Malala for starting something amazing and inspiring and I genuinely hope that younger generations their age will join and make this happen especially in Education. For me, it is also my biggest advocacy because I believe that an educated citizen will build a better future for a country. Malala was right, your age should not limit you from speaking up and standing up for what is right. A good old age is not an assurance of earned wisdom and a young heart can never be underestimated because of lack of experience. When it comes to love, care and responsibility, there’s no gender and age restriction. Let your voice be heard. Let us take responsibility for ourselves and for each other. Together, let us race to spread positivity, love and acceptance because today, the world has too much hatred and selfishness in it. The world needs love and this is free. Anyone can give this to anyone out of choice for free. One of my favorite thing to do is to read arguments or opinions on the comment section of youtube and I would come across some funny ideas, arguments, opinions etc. |
All opinions express here are just personal thoughts or reactions to any social, political and religious everyday issues.
This is also where I put most of my random personal reflections. Pretty much my diary. Archives
