RECAP & REVIEWThe story is painfully addicting and the sense of humor is just on point. There are too many funny scenes. One of my fave is when Piper just entered prison and was asked to strip.Well, she thought that's doable. But then she was asked to squat, spread her butt cheeks and COUGH! Piper's facial reaction was priceless !Another funny scene was "crazy eyes" calling her dandelion and later on her wife! The "NO TOUCHING" & "NO LESBIAN POLICY" (or should I say "lesbianizing each other" as Pennsatucky puts it) is hilarious and at times unfair and irritating. We are in need of human affection and hug is believed to be very effective source of comfort.Imagine not having one because apparently,it wasn't allowed.Well,I understand that they have to be strict considering this is prison we are talking about. This show has address or at least attracted very relevant and interesting topics that our society in general is dealing with right now in a fun and sometimes there are certain scenes that are not aesthetically pleasing to watch but it is part of a great story that needs to be told which by the way is one of the many appeal of the show. ON SEXUALITY Remember that talk Piper and Larry had when she told him Alex is also on the same prison with her? I just don't get why Larry is okay with Piper sleeping with a woman as long as it is not a man. We are talking about adultery and not some sexual orgy fantasy. ON PERSONAL BELIEF Jones: Do you know what a mandala is?" Chapman: "Um, those are those round Buddhist art things." Jones: “The Tibetan monks make them out of dyed sand laid out into big beautiful designs. And when they’re done, after days and weeks of work, they wipe it all away.” Chapman: "Wow, that’s, that’s a lot." Jones: "Try to look at your experience here as a mandala, Chapman. Work hard to make something as meaningful and beautiful as you can. And when you’re done, pack it in and know it was all temporary. You have to remember that, it’s all temporary.” Where do I begin To tell the story of how great a love can be The sweet love story that is older than the sea The simple truth about the love she brings to me Where do I start With her first hello She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine There'd never be another love, another time She came into my life and made the living fine She fills my heart She fills my heart with very special things With angels' songs , with wild imaginings She fills my soul with so much love That anywhere I go I'm never lonely With her around, who could be lonely I reach for her hand-it's always there How long does it last Can love be measured by the hours in a day I have no answers now but this much I can say I know I'll need her till the stars all burn away And she'll be there How long does it last Can love be measured by the hours in a day I have no answers now but this much I can say I know I'll need her till the stars all burn away And she'll be there PIPER ALEX AFFAIR & LOVE STORY For some reason,I automatically started singing Andy William's song "Where Do I Begin" after watching that scene when Alex and Piper finally reconcile and started to catch up and they don't know what to say and where to start. It was a beautiful phase because it a flashback of happy, naughty and sad memories they have spent together ten years ago.It was a melancholic scene and I love the chemistry between Schilling and Prepon. They simply nailed it bringing a wonderful prison make out scene that I have to admit is darn hot! Since then, I haven't stop watching til I finished all the 13 episodes in just one day! Just as Piper was trying hard to avoid Alex ,circumstances brought them together when she was assigned to fix the washing machine where Alex was in charge of the laundry.Confrontation happened and they become friends. The washing machine scene was intense, romantic and full of sexual tension. That's another fave of mine. One scene that I consider painful was when Piper gave Alex hopes again when she went to her talking about their future together after prison.Alex was so excited that she finally got a reason to plan her life ahead only to be broken again when Piper told her that she chose Larry. If it wasn't for love,I'm not sure what Alex might have done to Piper but even in her anger, she cannot just hurt Piper. That's how Alex loves her. So Piper was trying to belong in a group, she said something nasty about the food that gets her in trouble.Red (who was in charge of the kitchen) really takes pride in her job was offended of Piper's comment hence she starved her for days.Piper tried all her best to make up with Red.When she heard that Red was suffering from extreme backache, she improvised an ointment for her.A combination of Shea butter and green chili. The following day,Red started treating her nicely. And there's the hot dancing in celebration of Taysee's freedom which Pensatucky called it as "lesbianizing each other".According to Mr Healey,it's harboring to lesbian sex acts so Piper was sent to the SHU but since she's from an upper class,Mr Healey's boss asked him to let her out for fear of being questioned with no supporting evidence of violation. Right after she was taken out from SHU,she went straight to Alex and they ended having sex in the chapel.SHE INITIATED IT.An affair started.Another thing that confuses me was,it's alright for Larry for Piper to have sex with another woman but not with another man. It's alright for him to have that arrangement with Alex provided that she doesn't have intimate feelings for her? Alex have her hopes high.Piper even started discussing about their future together just as she thought Larry gave up on her.But when he came for a talk,Piper chose him. Alex being hurt of her decision warned her not to come to her anymore next time she's fucked up.Piper went to see Alex hoping they can have a talk but Alex was angry at her asking her to leave the room before season one ended. ON PRISON ATMOSPHERE Can you imagine being imprisoned but still operating something that you know will put you in prison? Well, there are too many things going at Lichfield corrections.Mendez and Red run a secret drug operation.Bennet was having secret relationship with Daya.He got her pregnant in which they have to cover it by seducing Mendez and having sex with him.She made sure Caputo catch them on the act so Mendez was suspended. Meanwhile,Red's drug operation was busted and Bennet was given the recognition. Larry started on his radio show where he talks about his relationship and Piper's experiences while in prison.Much to her disappointment,Larry said things on the radio that hurt Piper's relationship with his fellow inmates. Stacy was readmitted because according to her, life inside the prison is better than outside.Another prisoner died because of Mendez pressuring her to dispose all the drugs, she ended her life instead. Pennsatucky had been a dickhead to Piper. She tried her best to convert Piper to her own religion. At the end of the season,Piper lost her shit and she attacked Pensatucky. ON STATUS: IT'S COMPLICATED Prior to entering prison,Piper prepared herself by reading self help books on how to survive prison for 15 months. She learned that crying is a sign of weakness.Unexpectedly,Alex her former lover was also in the same prison. And she learned many things that she haven't read in books. Also, before she went to prison,Larry proposed to her.I really admired Larry's personality. It must be so hard for him considering how complicated things are.Piper's past just knock on their door one day and had changed everything.Despite Piper's past and sexuality issues,Larry didn't love her any less. It's extremely difficult to explain to their parents and friends. What sucks even more is finding out that Alex was also on the same prison and Piper didn't tell him.Too many reasons to reconsider but still, they chose to stay together and I have admired Larry for that. I took her as a high class bitch and very selfish.Yes,she's obviously smart and all but she also seemed to be someone who play on people's feelings like it wasn't a big deal at all. She was horrible to Alex. She left her at the time she needed her the most ten years ago and a few years after, they met again in prison and she gave Alex hopes to believe and love her again, only to fuck her up again. My initial reaction in season two was "she's such a bitch and very annoying".But come to think of,she had been through a lot too and had been taken advantage at times and I guess it's her first time to live her life in a very challenging environment. She really needed some serious thinking and growing up.I'm sure she faced the consequences. "I was there for Alex, everything was just a background" "Alex Vause was never a lamb. She is a wolf that eats the lamb" -Piper Chapman testifying in court I wonder though, did Piper choose Larry out of convenience? Well, with Alex she has this connection and everything is natural and amazing between them. But with Larry, she seemed reserved and secretive. There's no doubt Larry loved her but I am not sure if at this point of her life, she feels the same way for Larry. Alex loved her too without doubt. She doesn't have any clear plans about the life she'll be having after prison and didn't usually care that much anymore but when Piper started talking about their future again,Alex started planning thinking of their future together. But Piper is still unsettled. She said she chose Larry but how come she can't let go of Alex? How could she loved two people at the same time? Was it the prison atmosphere? Was it all just overwhelmed feelings? How could she be too selfish to give Alex such hope only to fuck her up again the second time? While in prison, she learned that you have to be unbreakable and not show any signs of weakness. You have to trust no one and you have to keep your secrets to yourself. You have to be extra careful with your words and actions. You have to learn to figure out your own shit. You have to be really numb to ignore the craziness going around. What you see is not what it seems. That people pull crazy stunts for their own motives. You really have to pay attention .Everyone has their own story to tell but read between the lines. You have to really pay attention. In between the story is a lie and a truth. "A guy without an ambition is a fresh breath. It's on top of my priority" |
Meanwhile,Piper was granted a 48 hours furlough to visit her sick grandmother, something that was never given to anyone before. When she was granted that request, she got more enemies than she already have. Most speculations has something to do with her being white, upper class and well a pet of Mr Healy. Unfortunately, her grandma died before her furlough. She attended the funeral still but his brother made it as his wedding day as well. |
Things got crazy that day.Piper also found out that Larry cheated on her.She got back to prison and told Red her business is doing okay even if it's close. She started editing a newsletter for the prison but Natalie stopped it.Polly visited her and she found out she's the one Larry slept with.
Natalie was the over all warden boss.A corrupt bitchy woman who's husband is running for senator but she later found out that he's gay and was having an affair. Also,Caputo replaced her after finding out her illegal activities.

Pennsatucky had been behaving a bit.She was closer to Mr Healy.Gloria still runs the kitchen caught between the war of the whites and the black.Things has been really weird in prison.
Mendez got back to prison but when Mr Caputo found out Daya was pregnant, they held Mendez accountable for it.Hence he was suspended again and even got him arrested for having an affair with an inmate.Mendez was seriously in love with Daya and was happy about it.He was more than willing to serve time in prison promising Daya he will get back to her once he served his time in prison.Bad news,it wasn't his own.

Business on drugs and other stuff is going on.Red was trying to redeem what was once her own.Well, the Spanish girls doesn't care about this shit. They are usually stereotyped people who ended up in prison because of stupid love stories and fucked up marriages. And some other nationalities such as Russians,Asians and other European countries.
The stereotyping also was another real issue in the real world. There are The big black bulky Afro Americans. The white racial discriminators. The hot Spanish Latinas and weird Asians etc.

Alex who is clueless how to live outside and Piper needed some growing up.Just as her bunkie advised her,she has to figure out what she really wanted. She cannot keep on hoping Alex to come running to her while still in love with Larry. She hurt him,he hurts her by sleeping with her best friend.Things got messy really for Piper. She has to gather her shit together and grow up.
TRUST NO ONE!
I don't know anymore what's worse. Was it the condition of the inmates and the fact that there are more people going to prison year after year or was it the sick political system of deception and corruption. It's the survival of the fittest for the inmates. As for those in administration,it was a game of deceit and power.
How do you make friends in a messed up crazy and dangerous place? How would you face people who don't fear death anymore because nothing was left to lose than their sadness and pain. How would you deal with people coming in and out of prison as if it was nothing to them. Some even treat prison as their own home better than the outside world who would see them as nothing but "institutionalized" or maybe a threat to society.

At the end of the day, most inmates wanted a group to belong or to protect them.A group where they feel love and not alone.Though each and everyone has different intentions,it clearly points to one thing. They are all in need of human affection. The strongest ones lead a pack of people. The weak are always used and attacked. You have to be strong enough not to allow others to look down on you or treat you as if you are nothing. The older ones protect their young ones. Some are pretending to be gay which they call it "gay for the stay" due to lack of sex for a long time.
Someone will do something nice but eventually wanting a favor in return. Some are just willing to do stuff just to be appreciated, loved and looked up to.
I think prison is more of a mental challenge. It's about keeping sane, getting your hopes high and never giving up while dealing with crazy shit each day to survive. What's worse when you are sick in prison and you don't know anymore which way to look.
What's really awkward and sad to watch is a mother and daughter in prison.Or sometimes, almost the whole family and I think this is real.My friend who's partner is in prison told me some horrible stories she saw in prison during her visits and it was actually too sad and too hard to hear. There's nothing even funny about it.Thankfully, the show had neutralize the feeling and have delivered us the fantasy fun side of life in prison.
I admire Piper Kerman's courage in sharing her experience knowing they will be changing some parts of it.I'm sure, she's aware of possible twisted plots like changing her original story.Nevertheless, her experience in prison is inspiring and worth sharing.
If I were in prison,I'd probably get in trouble for trying so hard to be too nice, gullible, trusting and well dependent on others. But who knows, prison changes you to the person you never expected yourself to be.With prison, you cannot just tell what you or anyone is capable of.Trust no one and watch your back.

This is an American drama comedy created by Jenji Kohan based on Piper Kerman's memoir during her time in prison.
First episode was aired on Netflix last July 11,2013.
I have finished reading the book and it wasn't as entertaining as it was on the show.Kudos to the creator and all the casts of the show.It just doesn't compare.
